R.E.M sleep - short for rapid eye movement - is the type of sleep that is responsible for our emotional repair; mood, motivation, happiness.
As it suggests, during R.E.M sleep your eyes move around quickly and randomly. It may also result in more vivid dreaming.
Sleep works in 90min wave cycles. So during the night, you will cycle from R.E.M to non-R.E.M sleep and back again. We need this R.E.M sleep to help with recovery and the aim is to get at least 2 hours per night.
It we fail to get enough R.E.M sleep, this can lead to detrimental effects to your mental and physical health. The can include reduced memory, concentration and heightened anxiety and irritability. Research shows that lack of R.E.M has also been linked to migraines and weight gain.
Hot tip: 30 minutes of direct sunlight a day will increase the quality of deep sleep you can get.
Consequences of poor sleep: Gaining body fat is easier and sugar cravings become more intense.
Did you know? Even a few seconds of blue light (screens) before sleep can reduce your melatonin (sleep hormone) count by up to 50% for 3 hours!
